Aeroponic Sprayers

Aeroponic systems are known for their fast growth rates and hydroponic nutrient efficiency. The reason why aeroponics isn’t extremely widespread is due to it’s initial cost to setup. If this is your first hydroponic setup, be warned that aeroponic setups are the most complicated for of hydroponics, it would be wise to start with a more beginner friendly system such as deep water culture.

Materials

  • 40 Gallon Tote
  • 5 ft. 1/2″ pvc pipe
  • 300+ GPH submersible water pump
  • 1/2″ pvc T-connector
  • 1/2″ pvc end caps
  • 4 micro-sprayers
  • 6 3″ net pots

Note: I assume the reader has basic knowledge of pvc connecting. When I say “attach” I mean use primer and pvc glue

The first step in building a low cost aeroponic system is to measure and cut the 1/2″ pvc pipe. Do think by putting your submersible pump at the bottom of your tote and connect the pvc pipe. Next, draw a line on the pvc pipe about 6 inches below the top of the tote. Your goal is to have the sprayers spraying about an inch below your net pots, which will be 3″-5″ deep.

Cut the pvc where marked and attach the T valve to the end not connected to the pump. Now measure the distance across the inside of the tote, long ways. Subtract 4 inches from that number and cut a length of pvc that long. Cut the pvc pipe into equal halfs and insert one into each side of the T-connector.

Now make 4 marks equally spaced across the top pvc pipe, this is where you’re micro-sprayers will go. Drill holes in the 4 marks using an appropriate size drill bit (look on sprayer packaging). Insert sprayers and attach end caps.

Drill your 6 holes in the tote lid using either a 3″ hole saw or a 3″ cardboard circle and a razor blade. Finally Add your net pots to the holes and fill the tote about half way up with water. Wow look at you, you just built an aeroponic system on the cheap. Now just add hydroponic medium and plants of your choice and you’re ready to go. When your plant’s roots are dipping in the water, you may want to purchase an air stone or 2 to drop in the bottom of the reservior. Happy gardening.
